The Realm of Joroin
Dragonborn resemble humanoid dragons. They’re covered in scaly hide, but they don’t have tails. They are tall and strongly built, often standing close to 6½ feet in height and weighing 300 pounds or more. Their hands and feet are strong, talonlike claws with three fingers and a thumb on each hand. A dragonborn’s head features a blunt snout, a strong brow, and distinctive frills at the cheek and ear. A dragonborn’s eyes are a shade of red or gold. Behind the brow, a crest of hornlike scales of various lengths resembles thick, ropy hair.
A typical dragonborn’s scales can be scarlet, gold, rust, ocher, bronze, or brown. Rarely do an individual’s scales match the hue of a chromatic or metallic dragon, and scale color gives no indication of the type of breath weapon a dragonborn uses. Most dragonborn have very fine scales over most of their body, giving their skin a leathery texture, with regions of larger scales on the forearms, lower legs and feet, shoulders, and thighs.
The Rite of Rebirth
Dragonborn cannot reproduce on their own, rather the must rely on the magic Bahamut grants to his most trusted priests to perform The Rite of Rebirth. Every so often humans, elves, halflings, and other humanoid races hear a call, like a faint question in their hearts, asking them if they want to devote themselves completely to Bahamut. Normally it is first heard before adolescence, but sometimes adults hear it as well. Not all those who are called answer, but those who do may undergo the Rite of Rebirth. Those who commit to this demanding ritual put aside all their weapons and equipment, dressing in a simple linen shift. They meditate with a high priest of Bahamut for a full Day and Night (60 days), their head filled with reminders of all they are giving up. If they elect to go on, they then enter an egg-shaped chamber at dawn of the last last day and sleep until dawn the next day, emerging as a dragonborn, a noble, draconic, scaled version of their previous shape, ready to become a permanent champion of Bahamut and all that he stands for. Once rebirthed, a dragonborn can expect to live for around fifty years.
